A good Global Positioning System (GPS) device can make the difference between a more enjoyable off road adventure or a compromise in your personal safety. Many still view a good GPS device as optional, but I think if they got beyond the learning curve, it would be one of those "must have" items".

Many won't even consider a dedicated GPS device because they use a smart phone and mapping app. A dedicated GPS device has the convenience of being instantly on, not reliant on data services, and compliant with laws which prohibit the use of cell phones. Many new vehicles come with a built in GPS system, but only come with street maps. Those that can be upgraded aren't always compatible with off road maps.

My first GPS device was strictly for street mapping, but the GPS technology has moved well beyond a single task. The better GPS devices even connect via bluetooth to your smart phone opening features that weren't available until recently.
